Our ghosts, as William Labov noted some years back, no longer say [buː] as they did fifty years ago in the heyday of "General American"; they now say [bʉː]. (Per contra, North Americans with complete cot-caught mergers, though they cannot hear the difference in ordinary words for beans, still distinguish easily between the [ɑːː] of satisfaction and the [ɔːː] of pity.)
